ABOUT ELLY FREER

Elly Freer is a photographer whose fervour for creative projects of any kind has seen her develop a highly varied portfolio. After graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Photography and Media Arts) from the Australian National University in 2011, Elly’s work has been featured in Canberra-based exhibitions at Canberra Contemporary Art Space Gorman House and Manuka, the ANU School of Arts, ANCA Artists Residencies and Gallery, and Kaori Gallery. Upon moving to Melbourne in 2014, Elly co-founded online journal Red Magpie, which features creative people and their work, she has also shot for herself.com, Green Press Juices and Cut Throat Knives.

Her versatility as a photographer and artist means that Elly is constantly challenging herself, and in particular to inject her personal ethos as a feminist and human observer into her work. She is heavily influenced by light in the natural world, and is passionate about shooting street and candid photography that captures human connections. Her work incorporates that candidness and creative manipulation of light in portraiture, still lifes, and landscape, and she uses self-portraiture to better understand her body and her place in the broader environment. Artistic influences include Sean Gladwell, Ricky Swallow, Cindy Sherman, Li Wei, Mary Ellen Mark, Sofia Coppola, Alfred Hitchcock and Terrence Malick. Elly is also an avid enthusiast of film, illustration and sculpture, and experiments with these mediums as well.
